To reconnect and accelerate the trade relationship, the Assam government has moved the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and NITI Aayog for reopening of the pre-partition railway links from Chittagong to Makum, Cox Bazar to Ledo and the third line between Bangladesh via Golakganj till Moirabari.

On Wednesday, Assam industry ministry Chandra Mohan Patwary said, “We have discussed with MEA and NITI Aayog for the restoration of three railway links from Assam to Bangladesh, while work for Agartala-Akhaura Railway Link has started. In order to discuss the trade, stakeholders meet will be held on October 22 and 23 in Guwahati. Along with top officials of the Ministry of Commerce, External Affairs, Road Transport and Ministers from Government are likely to attend this meet.

Patwary said that the North Eastern Region of India had been suffering unfortunate geographical isolation and perceived psychological alienation from the rest of the country as a consequence of partition.

Patowary further added, In India’s attempt to connect with these markets, Assam and the Northeast have an advantageous position by virtue of its geographical location, and Assam is going all out to capitalize on this opportunity.

North East has abundant natural resources like oil, coal, limestone, bamboo, tea, citrus fruits, and medicinal plants. Earlier, we have shared the natural resources with our neighboring countries through surface routes. Good infrastructure can boost the trade and commerce of the natural resources between India and Bangladesh in terms of roads, bridges, and railways.

Assam is all decked up to host the India Bangladesh Stakeholders meeting from October 22.
